If your goal is to protect your original investment and have access to your money, consider cash equivalent investments like passbook savings accounts, money market funds or CDs. These investments often provide quick access to your cash and stable rates of return, increasing short-term security.

Cash investments are often used in conjunction with other, more aggressive investments because the returns on cash investments are relatively low.

Cash equivalent investments are typically safe and liquid investments.

Cash equivalent investments include:

• Money Market* - A fund usually invested in Treasury bills.
• Certificate of Deposit (CD) - A fixed period, interest-bearing investment with a bank or savings & loan. An FDIC-insured CD is a low-risk investment.
• Savings - A bank savings account that generally provides a low, guaranteed, fixed rate of return.

*An investment in a money market fund is not insured or guaranteed by the FDIC or any other government agency. It is possible to lose money by investing in a money market fund.
